United Nations Mission in South Sudan
We deploy military liaison officers, primarily from the Army, to this South Sudan-based mission helping to monitor peace agreements, protect civilian sites and support the delivery of humanitarian aid.
South Sudan faces many challenges including political instability, civil war, a humanitarian crisis, ethnic and tribal tensions, and economic challenges. Our personnel on the ground work alongside military partners from a range of nations, as well as UN Police, UN civilians, and humanitarian agencies.
As part of our commitment to the maintenance of peace, security and the international rules-based order, New Zealand has supported peace efforts in South Sudan through this current mission since 2011, and prior to South Sudan’s independence we contributed personnel to the UN Mission in Sudan from 2005 to 2011.
The New Zealand Defence Force is currently mandated to deploy up to three personnel.
