Update on Workforce Savings Programme
On 20 March 2025, the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) began a consultation process with staff and unions on proposals for change across its civilian workforce to disestablish 380 currently filled positions, while creating 293 new roles.

This could lead to a reduction of about 80 employees at the end of the process.
This change process is due to the NZDF having to continue to prioritise its outputs of maintaining combat readiness and delivering on core military activities while staying within its budget.
This decision to release a proposal for change is not one that has been made lightly.
It is expected that through this process, if the proposals are implemented, most people who are proposed to be affected will be redeployed into suitable alternative positions in the new structure.
In developing the proposals, the NZDF has consulted with unions and thought carefully about ensuring there are opportunities for our people through proposed reconfirmation, reassignment and new roles in the structures.
It’s important to note that this is a consultation process with staff and unions, and no final decisions have been made, including on whether the proposal in whole or part, will be implemented or whether redundancies will be required.
Feedback from staff and unions is an important part of consultation and will be carefully considered before making final decisions.
