The New Zealand Defence Force has bolstered enforcement of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against North Korea, deploying the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) on Operation Whio.

HMNZS Aotearoa is our Polar-class sustainment vessel built by Hyundai Heavy Industries. Aotearoa is a purpose-built, technologically enhanced asset that adds real value to our combat operations, humanitarian relief functions and operational and training support. New Zealand’s Airborne Surveillance and Response Force (ASRF) is provided by No. 5 Squadron. After the retirement of the Air Force's Lockheed P-3K2 Orion aircraft in early 2023, No. 5 Squadron is now operating four Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft.

Our Defence Force has eight SH-2G(I) Seasprite maritime helicopters, operated by No. 6 Squadron. They are flown by Royal New Zealand Navy aircrew and maintained by Royal New Zealand Air Force maintainers.
During the operation, the ship was shadowed by seven different People’s Liberation Army (Navy) warships, which maintained a safe and professional distance throughout.
Up in the air, the crew of the P-8A Poseidon witnessed five ship-to-ship transfers, observed 59 vessels of interest and issued 19 deterrence messages.

Not operating alone in this area, HMNZS Aotearoa’s crew worked alongside Canada’s HMCS Max Bernays, France’s FS Prairial, and Japanese ships JS Maya and JS Hamana. They also carried out Replenishment at Sea for Australia’s HMAS Brisbane, and the United States Navy’s USS Shoup, USS Robert Smalls and USS Milius.
“Once again, our people have demonstrated professionalism, endurance and commitment to upholding the international rules-based order,” said Commander Rob Welford, Commanding Officer of HMNZS Aotearoa.
“Through maritime patrol, airborne surveillance and international cooperation, we delivered tangible impact – from deterring illicit activity to supporting allied ships at sea. The professionalism of our own crews, and those of our partner nations, was evident throughout.”
Air Component Commander Air Commodore Andy Scott said the P-8A Poseidon’s contribution to Op Whio was also vital.
“With its surveillance capabilities, the aircraft helps build the intelligence picture, informing the PSMX and enabling timely action.
“Our contribution to this deployment reinforces New Zealand’s strong and enduring commitment to UN sanctions enforcement and regional security.”
