Navy Band on tour in South Island
The Royal New Zealand Navy Band will be on tour in the lower South Island from 27 July-3 August.
22 July, 2021
The tour will begin with a public concert in Christchurch’s James Hay Theatre before travelling down the coast, performing in schools, at concerts and running a workshop with the Southland Youth Jazz Band.
The second major public concert is on the afternoon of Sunday 1 August in Invercargill’s Civic Theatre before heading to Queenstown, then returning to Auckland. The band will also be performing at free outdoor concerts in Invercargill and Queenstown (weather permitting).
Tickets for the indoor concerts are available from Ticketek and are just $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and $10 for children.
The concerts will showcase the band’s many specialties such as overtures, classic military marches, soloists, our famous Big Band, and music composed just for the band, telling the band’s story and the story of the Navy.
The Navy Band is a full-time unit formed in April 1960 and now based in its own purpose-built facility at the Devonport Naval Base. It comprises 25 of New Zealand’s best musicians, playing woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
The band’s military role is to support the ceremonial requirements of the Navy, the Defence Force and the Government. The band also undertakes numerous tours each year to different parts of the country, performing to communities with a mix of public performances and performances at schools, rest homes etc.
