“It’s not very often that the band travels that far south and I still have quite a few family and friends down there. It will be great for me to catch up and perform to them.”
Sergeant Yorkstone joined the band when he was 17 and straight out of school, “as soon as the Army would let me”.
He decided to join after being selected for the 2007 National Youth Band where a couple of fellow musicians were Army Band members.
“They totally sold it to me, I was up for an audition the following month.”
Over his 13-year career, Sergeant Yorkstone has had many highlights and experiences.
“My most special memory is being selected to be the bugler for the New Zealand Defence Force contingent in 2016 to Gallipoli.
“I performed the Last Post at Anzac Cove on the morning of Anzac Day.”
It was a high-pressure performance broadcast to millions around the world.
“It doesn’t get much more spine-tingling than that.”
He played at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019 and also played for Queen Elizabeth II at a private performance on the back lawn of Windsor Castle at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
“I love the travel and experiences. I have been part of some performances that your regular musician just wouldn’t have the opportunity to be a part of,” Sergeant Yorkstone said.
“The people that I work with are also great. We have musicians from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. It’s a great environment to work in and family to be part of.”
Playing at the Invercargill Civic Theatre, ‘New Zealand Army Band in Concert’ follows on from sold-out concerts around New Zealand in 2020.
Band Director of Music, Major Graham Hickman said the band played a variety of music, including classical, big band, brass band, show music and rock, showcasing the talents of the 30-strong ensemble.
“We are delighted to perform in the heartland when we can,” he said.
