15 March 2017
Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Clive Douglas has been appointed Sergeant Major of the Army, the Army’s top enlisted position. He replaces WO1 Mark Mortiboy who has finished his three-year tenure in the role and will take up another position within the New Zealand Defence Force.
WO1 Douglas, who is of Te Arawa descent, was born in Rotorua. He grew up in Ngongotaha and Nelson, before enlisting in August 1985 as a Rifleman in the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR).
He has served in Burnham, Singapore, Linton, Waiouru and Wellington, and has deployed to Somalia, Bosnia, Timor-Leste and the Sinai. He has also held various roles as an instructor, including a posting to the Royal Military College in Duntroon, Australia.
In December 2008, WO1 Douglas was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion RNZIR in Linton Camp. He later attended the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. His most recent position was Land Command Sergeant Major at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand.
WO1 Douglas says he is looking forward to his new position, and plans to continue what he says is the great work done before him by those in the SMA role.
