The life of Blackball miner Samuel Frickleton (pictured) was honoured at a special ceremony in Belgium on 7 June with the unveiling of a plaque near where he earned his Victoria Cross. Photos taken on the day can be viewed at the Image Gallery.
The unveiling was part of a ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Messines, one of the most successful battles on the Western Front during World War One. The ceremony was attended by New Zealand Defence Force staff based in London and Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff from Brussels. Read more about Samuel Frickleton.
