Competitions

Each year the New Zealand Defence Force runs a competition for students to raise awareness of Anzac Day.

The three top winners in 2012 were presented with their prizes by Chief of Staff Air Commodore Mike Yardley at a prize-giving ceremony at Defence House on 18 May.

AIRCDRE Yardley said that the Defence Force has been running a student’s competition since 2007, and it was encouraging to see so many young New Zealanders learning about how it is commemorated by entering the competition.

The winners were as follows:  Carlos Paenga (11) of Ruatoria, who chose to spend a day with the Navy.  Second prize of a day with the Air Force was chosen by Niva Chittock (11) of Christchurch.  Third prize winner Ali Abbari (12) will spend a day with the Army.

Four runners up received a NZ Defence Force prize pack: Ginny Gibbs (12) of Hastings, Mitchell Smith (12) of Hunterville, James Murray (11) of North Shore, and Patrick Takurua of Hunterville.
