Ordinary Stores Accountant (OSA) Aaron Fletcher-van Vugt, of Kirwee, Christchurch, has made a stellar start to his career in the Royal New Zealand Navy, taking out the Academic Prize at his graduation parade at the Devonport Naval Base at the end of last year.

The 23-year-old graduated at the Auckland Base alongside 42 other new sailors who were celebrating the completion of 18 weeks’ intense Basic Common Training (BCT).

BCT introduces Navy recruits to all aspects of naval life, and moulds them into capable, self-reliant sailors.

OSA Fletcher-van Vugt, a former Riccarton High School student, joined the Navy last year with a strong desire to travel, and “to live a life less ordinary”, he says.
