The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces of Ireland, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, is visiting New Zealand as a guest of the New Zealand Defence Force.

“Ireland is a valuable historic and contemporary partner of New Zealand’s and it is a pleasure to welcome Vice Admiral Mellett to the country,” said the Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General Tim Keating.

“The visit provides a good opportunity to advance our defence relationship and exchange views on defence capabilities, regional security and challenges such as countering violent extremism.”

A welcome ceremony and wreath-laying is taking place today at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, followed by talks with Lieutenant General Keating and other Defence officials.

Vice Admiral Mellett will also visit Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Auckland and Royal New Zealand Navy Base Devonport during his stay.
