The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation (NZGCF) joined forces during September in a charity partnership aimed at increasing awareness of ‘below the belt’ cancers.
A total of $14,201.68 was raised from various activities run by the Navy with all proceeds going to the NZGCF. This year’s efforts eclipsed the $9,400 raised by the Navy last year.
The activities included art and silent auctions, a quiz night, cake decorating competition, morning teas, public collections and a fun run. An exception to uniform protocol was also applied, with naval personal allowed to wear teal coloured nail polish with their uniforms for the month of September.
Devonport Naval Base Community Organisation Manager and Chair of the Fundraising Committee, Lissa Jackson said the committee was organised to promote and run the activities, and personnel and the wider naval community were very keen to help a worthwhile cause.
“Partnering up with the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation was an opportunity to not only raise funds but to educate and increase awareness of below the belt cancers. The fundraising and coordination of activities was a real joint effort by the naval and wider community including our Ships and New Zealand Defence Force units in Wellington. We are thrilled with the amount of money that was raised,” said Lissa.
September is the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation fundraising month to inform and educate New Zealand about all gynaecological with the aim of increasing the survival of New Zealand women.
