Chief of Defence Force to Visit China

The Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Tim Keating, has left for a visit to China where he will meet with People’s Liberation Army (PLA) military chiefs. 

“The visit is an opportunity to extend our engagement with the People’s Liberation Army,” he said.

“These visits are important because they increase understanding between respective countries’ militaries, as we look to increased joint activity and co-operation with the PLA.”

The visit will include a meeting with the Chief of General Staff, General Fang Fenghui.

During the visit he will also visit the Beijing Military Region Headquarters and call on its commander, Lieutenant General Song Puxuan. 

He will also visit the Jinan Military Region and a call on the Commanding Officer,  Lieutenant General Zhao Zongqi. This will be the first visit by the New Zealand Defence Force senior leadership to the Jinan region.

LTGEN Keating will also take part in a roundtable discussion at the China Institute of International Strategic Studies, and attend a function at the New Zealand Embassy.

He returns to New Zealand on 21 June.
