The Territorial Forces Employer Support Council has announced its 2015 Employer of the Year Awards.
The council is an independent body chaired by Peter Townsend, Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. Its role is to promote and facilitate employer support for part-time military personnel, and to develop initiatives to raise public awareness and support for New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Reserve Forces and youth programmes.
The awards have been made in three categories.
Best small-medium organisation: Country and Character Homes, Manawatu, for their support of carpenter Corporal Andrew Thomas, a section commander in 2nd Field Squadron, 2 Engineer Regiment.
Best large organisation: Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), Otago, for their support of Major Sally Dobbs, a nursing officer with the Army’s 2nd Health Support Battalion. She also works for SIT as an Academic and Relationship Leader in the School of Nursing.
The Chair and Director-General’s Award: New Zealand Police, for their loyal support to their Reservists (currently more than 100), over an extended period of time, and to acknowledge the excellent relationship between the Police and the NZDF.
The Reserve Forces component is a vital part of the NZDF. Since 2000, more than two thousand Reservists have deployed on operations both within New Zealand and overseas.
This includes Reservists deployed for more than two-and-a-half years in Christchurch following the earthquakes.
The NZDF Director-General Reserve Forces and Youth Development, Brigadier Jon Broadley, said that Reserve Forces are a cornerstone of the modern NZDF.
“They have a key augmenting and sustaining role in almost every facet of our work. They are an essential component of what we do, and the outstanding support we receive from so many employers is crucial to that,” he said.
“This is an opportunity to express our sincere thanks to them all, not just the award winners, for the contribution they make. Their support comes at a cost to their businesses. We acknowledge that, and we are proud of our association with them all."
The awards were presented at a Parliamentary function hosted by Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee.
