Air Force Assists in Successful Boat Rescue

24 February 2014

A Royal New Zealand Air Force P3 Orion has succeeded in a Search and Rescue operation, successfully locating a stricken fishing boat with a four person crew in Tongan waters on Sunday evening.

The vessel, named Odyssy had been foundering without motor since Thursday morning and was spotted in dim light.

All persons aboard the vessel were reported to be fit and well.

A Tongan patrol boat was on route to offer assistance and expected in the early hours of Monday morning (February 24).

The P3 Orion kept a careful watch on the vessel and maintained communications between both the Odyssy and the Tongan patrol boat until a successful rendezvous had been arranged.

The Orion has now returned to Whenuapai with the crew taking a well earned rest.
