Leading Writer Jo Stewart on parade with some of her trainees
Dare, dream, do. Three powerful words to inspire the next generation of leaders from Northcross Intermediate through the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s ‘Dream Team’ programme.
This week Leading Writer Jo Stewart, an operational administrator in the Royal New Zealand Navy, is part of a 300-strong Dream Team of New Zealanders who will be speaking to classrooms throughout the country in a bid to inspire young kiwis to ‘dare, dream, do’ – the theme of this year’s Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week.
The purpose of the Trust, established to continue the legacy of Sir Peter Blake, is to inspire and mobilise the next generation of NZ leaders, adventurers and marine environmentalists. As an instructor at the Recruit Training Squadron Jo is well placed to support the Leadership Week as she spends many hours mentoring a wide range of junior sailors as they transition from young boys and girls who walk through the gate of the Navy Base to men and women ready to serve their country.
"I get to lead, interact with, facilitate and mentor a class of new recruits and watch them start their careers in the Navy 13 weeks later. It’s a proud moment to see them graduate in front of their families knowing I had a hand in their training."
For Jo being part of the Leadership Week is another amazing experience adding to her time in the Navy. Since joining in 2004 she has served as far south as Antarctica and as far north as Dubai including spending time in HMNZ Ships CANTERBURY, TE KAHA, TE MANA, RESOLUTION and ENDEAVOUR.
"The Dream Team provides an amazing opportunity for our children to hear from leaders who are carrying on Sir Peter’s legacy of mobilising the next generation of young leaders and, through sharing our own personal experiences, can inspire students to take action towards realising their own goals and dreams."
Leading the Dream Team this year is New Zealand’s Governor-General, Lieutenant General The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae (the Trust’s patron), who became involved with the initiative because he wanted to encourage New Zealand’s youth to, "dream big, dream often and go after their dreams."
Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week begun with the Trust’s annual Leadership Awards on Friday 5 July, where the prestigious Blake Medal was presented, along with six Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards. Leadership Week will conclude with Red Socks Day on Friday 12 July.
