A soldier serving with the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan is receiving medical treatment following an incident during a live firing practice at a firing range in Bamian town area.
At 1103 local time on Monday 3 December a soldier from 2nd/1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (2/1 RNZIR) was injured when an unknown object, possibly a ricochet, penetrated his protective eyewear and entered his eye.
The soldier received initial treatment by colleagues before being airlifted to Bagram Air Base for exploratory surgery.
The soldier is in a stable condition and will be travelling to Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany for further treatment.
The soldier’s next of kin have been informed.
