The latest graduates of the Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) programme will proudly march out in front of friends and family this Saturday at Burnham Military Camp.
The LSV programme is run by the NZ Defence Force on behalf of Work and Income and is funded by the Ministry of Social Development. LSV is a 6-week residential course providing life skills to unemployed young people between the ages of 17-25.
Trainees have little free time during the six week course. The participants undergo a programme of intensive lectures, workshops and physical activities designed to develop core values of respect, team work and trust to boost their self confidence and self esteem. All LSV activities are geared at assisting those on the course to confidently and skillfully enter the workforce and to arm them with life skills for the future.
The Officer Commanding this course, Major Ian Lattimore, says, "Noticeable changes can be seen in most of the volunteers at the end of the programme. They have learned to work with others and to push themselves beyond what they thought they could do prior to arriving here. Our trainees exhibit a stronger sense of self-discipline, cooperation, confidence, and respect as well as a far greater ability to communicate and interact. Participants now hold their heads up, talk clearly and look you in the eye.
"LSV graduates will feel they can and indeed should compete in a tight job market whilst also having the strength to deal with issues in their lives and by contributing to society, not just taking from it. It is now up to employers, family and friends to give them that chance to contribute and support them in leading positive productive lives," notes Major Lattimore.
LSV courses have been held at Burnham Military Camp for over 20 years. This year alone over 1500 trainees will go through the LSV courses at Burnham and Hobsonville and Trentham.
