Members of the New Zealand Defence Force will support a number of ceremonies held in Wellington to commemorate Anzac Day on Wednesday 25 April.
The Chief of Defence Force (CDF), Lieutenant General Rhys Jones will attend the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph at 5.30am, along with Wellington based New Zealand Defence Force personnel.
A citizens’ service will be held at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul in Hill Street, starting at 9.00am. The Defence Force will be represented at this service by Brigadier Kevin Riordan. This service will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Wellington Cenotaph on Lambton Quay at 9.30am.
At the National War Memorial in Buckle Street Defence personnel will provide a dawn to dusk vigil ceremony over the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior from 6am to 5pm.
The National Wreathlaying and Commemorative Service will commence with a service at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, starting at 10.30am. Members of the public will be able to view the ceremonial proceedings and the wreathlaying from the Memorial Park on Buckle Street.
This service will be attended by Their Excellencies, Lieutenant General, The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae the Governor-General of New Zealand and Lady Janine Mateparae; The Right Honourable John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand; CDF, LTGEN Jones, Des Ashton representing the Secretary of Defence; Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Tony Parr; Chief of Army, Major General Tim Keating; and the Chief of Air Force Air Vice-Marshal Peter Stockwell and well as members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests.
The ceremony will be conducted by the Principal Defence Chaplain Lance Lukin and The Very Reverend Frank Nelson, Dean of Wellington.
A ceremony will also be held at 2.00pm at the Ataturk Memorial at Tarakena Bay which will be conducted by Chaplain Lance Lukin. Major General Tim Keating will represent NZ Defence Force.
This year Major General Atilla Ozturk, Head of Foreign Relations and International Security Affairs of Turkey will be attending Anzac Day services in Wellington. Major General Ozturk will represent the Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces and is here at the invitation of the Chief of Defence Force.
On a lighter note, the swing band of the RNZAF and the Beat Girls will feature in We’ll meet again - Anzac day concert, to be held at the Wellington Town Hall from 7.00-8.30pm. Tickets are available from ticketek.
