IED attack on Kiwi Patrol in Afghanistan

28 April 2011

A Kiwi patrol from the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device in the north eastern area of Bamyan province at approximately 5 AM Afghanistan time today (around 12.30 PM NZ time).

The NZ Defence Force personnel were in a Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) and sustained no injuries. The vehicle suffered some damage but is able to be recovered.

A second patrol is providing assistance.

“This incident has highlighted the value in deploying the LAV to Afghanistan as its upgraded armour protected those inside from injury”, says Commander Joint Forces Major General Dave Gawn.
