1 November 2010
Employers who support their Reserve Force employees are highly valued by the NZ Defence Force (NZDF) and the Government. The top employers from the Auckland and Northland region will be recognised at a special ceremony on Thursday 25 November to be held at the newly opened Navy Museum in Devonport.
Nominees for the Auckland/Northland 2010 regional award include contenders from the public sector and private sector. This awards event will highlight the diverse mix of local businesses that have reservists in their employ and the valuable contribution these businesses make to New Zealand’s regional peacekeeping efforts, often at considerable expense to the employer.
The awards will be made by the Auckland/Northland Territorial Force Employer Support Committee which was established by the NZ Defence Force to provide support to employers of territorial reservists. Committee Chair, David McGregor (senior partner of Bell Gully and retired Territorial Brigadier) says the Committee was established in recognition of the fact that reserve service can potentially place a strain on some businesses.
Many reservists get the opportunity to serve overseas on peacekeeping operations and that can place a strain on relationships with their employers. These awards will recognise employers who have gone the extra mile to enable their employees to serve our nation.
The Reserve Forces of the NZ Defence Force are made up of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR), the Territorial Force (TF) of the NZ Army, and the Territorial Air Force (TAF). Currently there are over 2,200 territorial reservists serving in the NZDF, of this there are some 500 in the Auckland/Northland region.
The winner of the Auckland/Northland regional award automatically goes forward as a nominee for the national employer of the year award which will be held in Parliament Buildings, Wellington.
Last year’s Auckland/Northland regional award was won by TVNZ who also won the national employer of the year award.
