The funeral of the New Zealand Army officer killed in action in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Tim O’Donnell, will be held at Linton Military Camp on Wednesday the 11th of August.
Media will be allowed to cover the service, the reading of the “Ode” shortly after, and Lieutenant O’Donnell’s departure from the base.
Media wishing to cover this event must register with Paul Stein on 021 409 033 or MAJ Kristian Dunne on (021) 478 574 before midday tomorrow, the 10th of August.
On the day of the funeral, 11August, all media must report to the main gate of Linton Military Camp no later than 10am with appropriate photo ID, after which they will be escorted onto the base,
Media will have from 10.30 until 11.30 to set up and then will leave this location until returning for the service at 12.30pm,
The service will begin at 1pm and an audio/visual feed will be available from Outpost Digital Media,
This feed will carry and sound/pictures of the various dignitaries, political leaders and some family members who will be speaking during the service,

TVNZ will also have a camera carrying the audio/pictures of the various dignitaries, political leaders and some family members who will be speaking during the service and they will be feeding this out.

Still photographers who may wish to take photos during the service are advised that no shutter sounds or flashes will be allowed and media are asked to please desist from showing extreme close ups of grieving family members.
Once the service is over, media will be moved to a nearby location to capture:
- The reading of the “Ode”,
- The gun salute,
- The Last Post, and
- The Piper.
Once this is complete the media must remain in this location while the funeral cortege moves off.
At the main gate a Haka will be performed when Lieutenant O’Donnell is handed back into the care of an undertaker for a private family service.
Media may be at the gate but will have to be separate from those who have attended the service and the reading of the “Ode” as travel from one site to the other will not be possible.
Once Lieutenant Tim O’Donnell has left base, media are requested to respect the family’s privacy.
Media are expected to be off base by approximately 4pm although live linking shots will be allowed later outside the main gate if requested.
Please note that there will be strict filming/photographing requirements on the base:
- Media must stand where directed and be accompanied at all times.
- Interviewing any NZ Defence Force personnel on the base is not permitted
Burnham Military Camp
There will also be service held at Burnham Military Camp in Christchurch on the 11th of August at the same time as the service at Linton, for members of Lieutenant O’Donnell’s unit who are unable to be at Linton Camp.
