Defence Force Youth Development facility opens in Wellington on Tuesday

4 June 2010

Associate Defence Minister, Hon Heather Roy will officially open the New Zealand Defence Force’s, Youth Development Unit (Central) at Trentham, Upper Hutt on Tuesday June 8 at 10am.

The Youth Development Unit is the Wellington regional base for the delivery of the Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) course by the New Zealand Defence Force, for the Ministry of Social Development.

The LSV course is provided as a result of the Governments commitment to expand youth development opportunities, announced in 2009.  Previously LSV had only been provided at Burnham Camp, south of Christchurch but it is now being delivered at Hobsonville in West Auckland and Trentham.

The LSV course is an intensive 6 week residential course providing lifeskills to unemployed young people aged between 17-25.  Trainees are volunteers who apply for the course through Work and Income.  In 2010 almost 2000 trainees will go through the LSV course at Burnham, Hobsonville or Trentham.
