After their successful central North Island tour the 65-strong Central Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force have returned home and are set to wow Wellington with a special Gala concert.
On Thursday 12 March, 7.30pm at the Wellington Town Hall the band will perform a range of music including Shostakovich, Liszt and ABBA; while guest vocalists Bella Kalolo and Stephanie Paris will add further colour to the evening.
The concert, billed Sax in the City, will also feature the band’s seven saxophone players.
“The Central Band of the RNZAF is a unique musical institution. It is the biggest band in Australasia and its saxophones range from the huge bass to the soprano saxophone,” says the Air Force’s Director of Music, Squadron Leader Owen Clarke.
Earlier in the day the band will treat over a thousand Wellington school children to a special Schools Concert where they are encouraged to clap, dance and even conduct the band.
The Central Band of the RNZAF, which first paraded in 1937 for the coronation of King George VI, has become a popular Wellington icon and concert goers are encouraged to book their tickets quickly.
Tickets: Adults $18, student/child $5 and are available Ticketek 04 384 3840.
