What to do when life gets tough
When facing a military challenge, we look for guidance from those with experience. We agree on a plan and we execute it. That same approach can work when we’re struggling personally. But it can be hard to know where to turn for guidance. And that is why NZDF has launched 0800NZDF4U (0800 693 348).
0800NZDF4U is a free service provided by an experienced external provider to ensure complete confidentiality. It is the first step in building a plan to overcome anything that may be troubling you – from stress, substance abuse concerns, death of a loved one, relationship challenges, money concerns, assault or bullying.
It is available to you and your family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
When you call 0800NZDF4U you will speak to a trained health professional who will support you and help you work out the next steps to take. This confidential service is about you having the right tools and support to overcome the situation.
From time-to-time life’s challenges become overwhelming. Don’t wait until they get bigger. The key to overcoming life’s challenges is finding the right support to help you out. And if you notice a mate or family member struggling, please encourage them to ask for help too.

When you call the 0800NZDF4U you will speak to a trained health professional who will support you and help you determine the next steps. This is about you having the right tools and support to overcome the situation.
Can what I say get back to NZDF?
No. Everything you say is completely confidential and is bound by the Privacy Act. Information can only be passed on to Police, NZDF or any other agency with your permission unless required by law.
Will my friends, family or boss find out?
No. Everything you say is completely confidential and is bound by the Privacy Act. Information can only be passed on to Police, NZDF or any other agency with your permission. The only exception to this is if your or someone else’s safety is at immediate risk.
Who can use this service?
0800 NZDF4U is available 24/7 in confidence to all NZDF personnel (Regular Force, Reservists and civilians) and their families.
My children/partner/parents need support. Is this available to them too?
Yes. 0800 NZDF4U is available to both you and your family.
Why do you use an external provider?
Our provider is very experienced at providing support services in New Zealand and Australia. When you give information to some NZDF personnel they may be obliged to record or pass that information on. Any discussions you have via this service will not be reported back to NZDF without your consent.
Does this replace the other support services available?
No. The existing services will continue to operate. Some calls will be redirected automatically. Civilian staff can continue to call Vitae directly. All other options for finding support, such as the chaplains, remain. 0800NZDF4U is just another way for you to access help.
My friend/partner has some problems. Can 0800 NZDF4U give me some advice to help me support them?
Dealing with other people’s challenges can be incredibly stressful and confusing. And it has a massive affect on your life. Your partner is covered by the new 0800 service. If your friend is in NZDF encourage them to call the number too.
