Brigadier Michael Shapland
Brigadier Michael John Shapland was born in Lower Hutt in March 1966. He received his secondary education at Christchurch Boy’s High School.
Brigadier Shapland enlisted into the Territorial Force of the New Zealand Army in August 1984. He served briefly with the 2nd Battalion (Canterbury and Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast), Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment before transferring to the Regular Force as an Officer Cadet in January 1985. Brigadier Shapland undertook initial officer training at the Officer Cadet School, Portsea of Australia (Portsea), graduating into the Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport in the rank of Second Lieutenant in December 1985.
Brigadier Shapland’s career has progressed though a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments. Highlights have included Troop Commander with 51 Air Dispatch Troop, Chief Instructor Logistics Operations School, JSO1 Logistic Plans at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand and Commanding Officer 2nd Logistic Battalion. Most recently, he was posted as the New Zealand representative to the ABCA Program, Washington DC, USA and in January 2010 he was posted as Director Training and Commitments, Army General Staff, Wellington. From September to December 2010 he was appointed the Acting Deputy Chief of Army followed by his appointment as the Director of Logistics Support, Defence Logistics Command. In April 2011 Brigadier Shapland assumed the appointment as the Logistics Commander (Land), Defence Logistics Command, Upper Hutt. In December 2014 Brigadier Shapland was posted to his current appointment as the Director Capability Portfolio Planning, Headquarters New Zealand Defence.
Brigadier Shapland has enjoyed a number of opportunities to attend military courses overseas. These include the Australian Water Transport and Terminal Operations course, Logistics Executive Development Course in the United States and in 2000 he completed the Australian Defence and Command Staff College Course graduating with a Master of Defence Studies. In 2014 he completed the Defence and Strategic Studies Course, Canberra and graduated with a Master of Arts (Strategic Studies) and a Fellow of the College of Defence and Strategic Studies.
Brigadier Shapland has undertaken a number of operational deployments during his career. These include a 6 month deployment to the Antarctic, liaison officer for Kiwi Company, United Nations Protection Force, in the former Yugoslavia, and the Chief, Current Operations Joint Support Centre, Headquarters Peace Keeping Force East Timor. Whilst at HQ JFNZ he led numerous reconnaissance teams including the Provincial Reconstruction Team to Afghanistan
Brigadier Shapland is married to Lucy and they have three daughters Ella, Kate and Maggie Rose.
His interests include any sports, music, and reading.
